Impact

Each year, the women of JLBC invest thousands of hours into Battle Creek and the surrounding areas through volunteering with community agencies and local programs. JLBC supports programs and projects which empower women, teens, and children, build self-esteem, and advocate against abuse and neglect.

Supporting Foster Families

The 2019 Junior League kicked off a new focus for the members of JLBC. By member vote, the service focus for the next 3 years will be on foster care and, more specifically, supporting foster care families in Calhoun County. JLBC members spent 2019-2020 learning about the foster care system as a whole as well as local agencies working in foster care throughout Calhoun County. During the remaining years of the 3 year service cycle, JLBC is working with local foster care agencies to support foster care families. Projects include hosting a Trunk or Treat, providing activity boxes for families, and sponsoring foster families for Christmas. Thank you to Samaritas, Family Enrichment Center, and Family and Children's Services for partnering with us. And thank you for ALL that you do to serve foster care families throughout Calhoun County and beyond!

Women's Empowerment

Each year JLBC celebrates the importance of empowering women as leaders. We join forces with local women, business, and the community to host the Annual Women's Summit & Brunch. Each year has a theme; Women's Health First, Celebrating Women in Business, or Confidence. We are excited to host you each year during National Women's History Month in March! Join us for a panel discussion celebrating our collective accomplishments as women. Chat with old and new friends, bid on our penny/silent auction items, and enjoy some words of wisdom from our special speakers. This is a ticketed event and scholarships may be available for women and teens needing financial assistance to attend. We hope to see you at the next Women's Summit & Brunch!

Teen Volunteers

Volunteering and community service are at the heart of Junior League. JLBC aims to instill a love of volunteering from an early age by providing a variety of volunteer opportunities for children and teenagers. In particular, we invite teen girls to volunteer with JLBC via volunteer projects throughout the year. Please email us to find out more about our opportunities.

BBBS Bowl For Kids Sake

Bowl For Kids’ Sake is Heartland Big Brothers Big Sisters’ signature fundraiser. Each year hundreds of supporters come together to have fun and raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters as we change how children grow up! Bowl For Kids’ Sake is the perfect way for individuals to make an impact on our community - it only takes a little bit of effort to raise the money that is vital to our program’s success. We ask that each bowler raise a minimum of $100 or their team raises at least $500 to participate.

S.A.F.E. Place Support

Since inception, JLBC has been tied to the efforts of establishing and supporting the S.A.F.E. Place domestic violence shelter. In 2018 the proceeds of the Little Black Dress Initiative went to support the remodel of the laundry room and to purchase kitchen supplies.

Little Black Dress Initiative

Originated by the Junior League of London in 2014, the Little Black Dress Initiative (LBDI) seeks to make “poverty unfashionable” by illustrating the effects of severe financial hardship, low self-esteem and limited access to resources and opportunities for women and children.

During a work week in October, JLBC members will wear one black dress or ensemble for five consecutive days to raise awareness about the issue of poverty in Battle Creek. Advocates will wear a pin that says, “Ask Me About My Dress,” to generate discussion about the initiative and its objectives. Each year JLBC will raise funds for a particular project that is often tied to our volunteer efforts in the community.
