Each year, the JLBC invests thousands of volunteer hours to community agencies and programs that support
empowering women and children to become self-sufficent and build self-esteem.

We support programs and projects that empower women and children, build self-esteem, and advocate against abuse and neglect.

Personal Care Products

Since 2015, JLBC has collected and distributed more than 8,000 personal care products in Battle Creek to ensure that no individual has to suffer from low self-esteem due to an inability of affording personal care products. JLBC has partnered with multiple organizations over the past four years to bring awareness to this cause including the Battle Creek Area Association of Realtors, the Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness,  and our three year partner for dental hygiene products (Grace Health). This project would not have been succesful without the support and donations from the community! Moving forward, JLBC plans to continue in supporting the feminine hygiene efforts of Charitable Union in specific ways to be determined.

Each year JLBC celebrates the importance of empowering women as leaders. We join forces with area women, business, and the community to host the Annual Women's Summit & Brunch. Each year has a theme; Women's Health First, Celebrating Women in Business, or Confidence. We are excited to host you each year during National Women's History Month in March! Join us for a panel discussion celebrating our collective accomplishments as women. Chat with old and new friends, bid at our penny/silent auction item, and enjoy some words of wisdom from our special speakers. This is a ticketed event and scholarships may be available for women and teens needing financial assistance to attend. We hope to see you at the next Women's Summit & Brunch!

Teen Volunteers

JLBC aims to instill a love of volunteering from an early age by providing a variety of volunteer opportunities for children and teens ages. In particular, we invite teen girls to volunteer with JLBC via volunteer projects throughout the year. Please email us to find out more about our opportunities.

BBBS Bowl For Kids Sake

Bowl For Kids’ Sake is Heartland Big Brothers Big Sisters’ signature fundraiser. Each year hundreds of supporters come together to have fun and raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters as we change how children grow up! Bowl For Kids’ Sake is the perfect way for individuals to make an impact on our community - it only takes a little bit of effort to raise the money that is vital to our program’s success. We ask that each bowler raise a minimum of $100 or their team raises at least $500 to participate.

S.A.F.E. Place Support

Since inception, JLBC has been tied to the efforts of establishing and supporting the S.A.F.E. Place domestic violence shelter. In 2018 the proceeds of the Little Black Dress Initiative went to support the remodel of the laundry room and to purchase kitchen supplies.

Little Black Dress Initiative

Originated by the Junior League of London in 2014, the Little Black Dress Initiative (LBDI) seeks to make “poverty unfashionable” by illustrating the effects of severe financial hardship, low self-esteem and limited access to resources and opportunities for women and children.

During a work week in October, JLBC members will wear one black dress or ensemble for five consecutive days to raise awareness about the issue of poverty in Battle Creek. Advocates will wear a pin that says, “Ask Me About My Dress,” to generate discussion about the initiative and its objectives. Each year JLBC will raise funds for a particular project that is often tied to our volunteer efforts in the community.

Each year, a community leader is nominated from our membership to lead JLBC forward.

Let's look at what our current leader has to say!

Kimberly Wickham, President 2018-19

Developing the potential of women is key. My goal for this year is to help the women of JLBC overcome their fears by helping them to find themselves as leaders and empowering them to go out in to the community and make a difference. I know that with each league president that has served during my membership, I have gained skills, insight and wisdom from them.

With the 2018-2019 league year in full swing, this amazing group of women is doing incredible things and they are living proof of what happens when women band together for a common cause. It is such an amazing honor to be chosen to lead JLBC this year.
